This episode explores man's capability to build architectural treasures on a grand scale, specifically, the Colosseum, a Roman masterpiece started by the Emperor Vespasian and completed in 80 A.D. Due to knowledge passed on by their Etruscan neighbors and forefathers, the Romans were provided with the techniques and skills for future architectural solutions, such as hydraulics and the development of arches. The Colosseum was used as a center for dramatic entertainment and "sport" for nearly 500 years; it also served as housing in the early medieval ages.
