Louis Armstrong has been called the most important jazz improviser in the history of jazz. Although his New Orleans neighborhood was poor in nearly everything else, it was rich in superb music. Young Louis took it all in, especially the cornet blowing of Joe King Oliver. But after a run in with the police, 11-year-old Louis was sent away to the Colored Waifs Home for Boys where he became a disciplined musician in the school's revered marching band. He was so proficient that by the time he returned to his neighborhood, the King himself became his mentor and invited Armstrong to play with him in Chicago. In a lively text that bops to the beats of the jazz, accompanied by lush watercolor illustrations, this is a joyful tribute to the virtuoso musician and buoyant personality who introduced much of the world to jazz.

50 Cent is an American rapper, entrepreneur, investor, and actor, whose rise to fame and fortune is an incredible story. Born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, in a very poor and dangerous neighborhood in Queens, NY, his mother, Sabrina, was only 15 at the time of his birth; sadly, she reverted to dealing drugs to support her child and was mysteriously murdered when the boy was only eight. Curtis moved in with his grandparents, but spent most of his remaining youth dealing drugs, which made him a lot of money, but also landed him in jail, where his dream about making a career in music was born. After his release, he adopted his stage name "50 Cent" to reflect the change he was making with his life, and he began to record original Rap music. Somehow in 2000, he survived being shot nine times; then through sheer determination, he continued to record and in 2002 he collaborated with rappers Eminem and Dr. Dre to rapidly rise to fame with the release in 2003 of his album, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," which has been certified platinum eight times, and "The Massacre," in 2005. Arising from a life of drugs and crime to become one of the biggest artists on the planet, his journey, as we see here, is an inspiration.
Magician and stunt performer Harry Houdini is widely regarded as the greatest escapologist of all time. Although he personally claimed to have been born in Appleton, Wisconsin, April 6, 1874, he actually was born Ehrich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Hungary. His family immigrated to the U.S. in 1878 and after living briefly in Appleton, they moved to New York City where the young Ehrich became fascinated with the art of trapeze as well as magic and evolved into Harry Houdini. For a while he billed himself as "The King of Cards," but his true fame grew as he experimented and perfected his incredible escape acts. This exceptional biography of the legendary performer features rare photographs and vintage footage from many of his escape performances, and several of his movie appearances; it also explore his life and struggles to make it to the top. Interviews with Houdini's niece, Marie Blood, as well as Houdini experts and famous magicians give true insight into the magician's often-difficult private life.
The first decades of aviation brought both triumph and tragedy. To fly an early airplane required skill, courage and daring. A new breed of adventurers looked to the heavens for their challenges, and thrilled audiences around the world. The advent of the movie camera meant that their exploits could be broadcast to every corner of the globe, and recorded for posterity. Several of the world's great aviators learned their craft in the bloodbath that was the Great War. The pilots of Germany, France and Britain who were able to master combat flying in time to prevent an early death were known as "Air Aces."
Born in Essex, England, Victoria Caroline Adams first caught the attention of the media and public as Posh Spice, a member of one of the most successful female musical groups in the world. "Wannabe," the first Spice Girls' single, went to number one in 31 countries; the band became an instant global phenomenon, especially with pre-teen and teenage girls. Four number one hits later she met future husband, sports legend David Beckham, and together, they became one of the UK's most photographed couples. After the Spice Girls split in 1999, Victoria and David married; their young son, Brooklyn, was the ring-bearer at their wedding. With her solo singing career going nowhere, Victoria decided to follow her passion for fashion. Her rail-thin figure and taste for classic elegance made her the perfect choice as a celebrity promoter for designer Karl Lagerfeld. One problem with fame, however, personal issues keeps her face in magazines - often for the wrong reasons.
