Magician and stunt performer Harry Houdini is widely regarded as the greatest escapologist of all time. Although he personally claimed to have been born in Appleton, Wisconsin, April 6, 1874, he actually was born Ehrich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Hungary. His family immigrated to the U.S. in 1878 and after living briefly in Appleton, they moved to New York City where the young Ehrich became fascinated with the art of trapeze as well as magic and evolved into Harry Houdini. For a while he billed himself as "The King of Cards," but his true fame grew as he experimented and perfected his incredible escape acts. This exceptional biography of the legendary performer features rare photographs and vintage footage from many of his escape performances, and several of his movie appearances; it also explore his life and struggles to make it to the top. Interviews with Houdini's niece, Marie Blood, as well as Houdini experts and famous magicians give true insight into the magician's often-difficult private life.
As the gang from Disney's extremely popular High School Musical franchise prepare to graduate in the movie, "High School Musical 3," tweenies everywhere wonder what's to become of the actors that brought their favorite characters to life. This bio charts the rise of Zac Efron, from a school kid who had to chase girls to get them to go out with him, to the heart throb he is today, adored by millions of fans around the world. From the moment it was broadcast, "HSM" was a hit, propelling Efron, his co-star and girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, and the rest of the cast into the stratosphere. Soundtracks and sequels followed, and merchandise sales soared. Efron didn't stop at "HSM," however, joining the cast of the film "Hairspray." That movie was a hit, ensuring that Zac had a career outside of the franchise. At the premiere of "High School Musical 3," Zac and Vanessa told reporters they hoped that teens could relate to their characters' trials and tribulations in high school. For Efron, Hudgens, and the rest of the cast, however, it's off to the next challenge: establishing a career after "graduation."
Flying at the speed of sound doesn't seem like the type of thing that was possible in the 1960's, but that was when traditional rivals Britain and France collaborated to build the world's first Concorde, a jet that could traverse the Atlantic in just 3 hours, at twice he speed of sound, around about 1400 miles and hour. The all-metal Trident jet was a popular choice for airlines but couldn't compete with the glamour and allure of the Concorde. However, its inception wasn't without its complications. Britain and France squabble over many aspect of its design, including the spelling of the name, eventually adoption the "e" on the end as a tribute to "Excellence and England."
Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp has made a career of playing some strange characters, including Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Raul Duke and Donnie Brasco; all of which brought him critical acclaim, but little commercial success. Due to an early decision in his career to only play roles that pleased him, Johnny turned down parts in blockbuster films such as "Titanic," "The Matrix" and "Speed." Then, in 2003, Johnny agreed to pay the role of the slurring, lecherous Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," which turned out to be a box office bonanza, generating 653-million dollars worth of treasure and earning him his first Academy Award nomination for the character he said he based his performance on the Rolling Stones' famous guitarist, Keith Richards.
