Jose de la Luz Saenz (1888-1953)-or Luz-believed in fighting for what was right. Although he was born in the United States, he and his family experienced prejudice because of their Mexican heritage. When World War I broke out, Luz volunteered to join the fight. Because of his ability to quickly learn languages, he became part of the Intelligence Office in Europe. However, despite his hard work and intellect, Luz often didn't receive credit for his contributions. Upon his return to the US, he joined other Mexican-Americans whom he had met in the army to fight for equality. His contribution, along with others, ultimately led to the creation of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is the oldest Latino civil-rights organization. They are an inescapable presence here, situated east and north of Los Angeles. They rise up very steep and the tallest peak is Mount San Antonio, locally known as Mount Baldy, because of the scarcity of trees. Angelina Jolie has already lived a life that few could rival. She is the third actress in history to earn $20 million for a film, but winning accolades does not fuel her true mission in life. She is driven by a commitment to help those less fortunate, and this quest runs skin deep in this remarkable woman. Angelina became aware of worldwide humanitarian crises while filming "Tomb Raider" in poverty stricken Cambodia. Deeply affected by what she saw, Jolie then turned to the United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees and became a Goodwill Ambassador for them in 2002. In 2005, she made her third visit to Pakistan to help victims of the Kashmir earthquake, and the devastation had a profound effect on Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt. Since that trip, Angelina and Brad have used their global profiles to generate support for causes that don't appear in the mainstream media. They set up the Jolie-Pitt Foundation and have cleverly used the public's interest in their lives to help their causes, but the real challenge for the two is finding a balance between their careers and their family of three adopted and three natural children.
The Boeing 737 twin engine jetliner was to become Boeing's greatest success. Launched in 1967, the short range transport entered service the following year, and has remained in production ever since. In the 737, they have combined the best of all previous Boeing air craft. Among these is the fact that it has one of the lowest approach speeds of any jet transport, a great asset when landing at smaller airports with shorter runways. It also required minimum equipment for use in refueling. However, despite all its advantages, the 737 was soon overshadowed by the new, improved 747 Jumbo jet.
Named after the famous painter because his pregnant mother was viewing the works of da Vinci when she first felt baby son kick, the talented actor Leonard DiCaprio got his break in Hollywood at the age of sixteen. Playing the mentally-challenged brother of Johnny Depp in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," he was nominated for an Academy Award. But it was his portrayal of Romeo in Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" that made him a household name. Leonardo followed that movie up with perhaps his biggest role to date, in James Cameron's "Titanic. " Roles have come and gone since, of course, but one thing is for certain, Leonardo DiCaprio will forever be remembered for standing on the front of the famous doomed ocean liner with his arms wrapped around Kate Winslet.
