SMITH ISLAND "This American Land" spent time with residents of Maryland's Smith Island back in our first season. It was before the climate crisis was everyday news, yet the people here were already dealing with sea-level rise and the genuine possibility that the next generation may have to abandon the oyster fishing and tourist draw for this beautiful four-square mile archipelago. We'll explore what's changed since then, and the long-term plans of some families who have lived here for generations. THE BENEFITS OF BEAVERS Humans have long marveled at the engineering skills of beavers. Now scientists are learning more about how beaver dams help restore rivers during droughts and after wildfires. Artificial intelligence techniques are being used to both locate dams, and to build dams that replicate nature's keenest construction workers. MISSISSIPPI WETLANDS There's a lot of work underway to protect and restore the largest wetland ecosystem in the United States. The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley stretches across seven states. Now there are millions of dollars available to restore its forest and stream habitats. The efforts are reducing flooding, sequestering carbon, and creating more hunting and fishing habitat with help from private landowners. Hundreds of bird species and the iconic Louisiana black bear also benefit from these conservation practices.

Crossroads of a Nation: Missouri's Rhythm, Roads & Roots

Duration: 0:56:00

CROSSROADS OF A NATION: MISSOURI'S RHYTHM, ROADS & ROOTS explores how Missouri's cultural contributions helped shape the very identity of America. Positioned at the center of the country, the state became not only a crossroads of commerce and migration but also of creativity and tradition. The freedom of the open road found its most enduring image in Route 66, stretching from St. Louis westward into the horizon. Alongside these roads rose the sounds of a nation in the making: blues pouring out of St. Louis clubs, jazz rhythms taking root in Kansas City and country twang echoing through the Ozarks. These musical traditions, born of hardship and hope, would go on to shape the soundtrack of the 20th century. Missouri's influence didn't stop with music. From the smoky aroma of barbecue pits to the rise of craft brewing and local beer, the state cultivated flavors that became cornerstones of American cuisine. Kansas City barbecue came to embody not just a style of cooking but a way of gathering, celebrating and passing down heritage. Baseball diamonds across the state, from the Negro Leagues in Kansas City to the Cardinals' legendary dynasty in St. Louis, offered a stage where stories of triumph, struggle and community played out before a national audience. Through vivid stories, archival imagery and expert voices, CROSSROADS OF A NATION: MISSOURI'S RHYTHM, ROADS & ROOTS reveals how the state's culture radiated far beyond its borders. This is a story of how traditions born in the heartland became woven into the fabric of American identity. Missouri did not merely reflect the nation; it helped define it, turning crossroads into culture and everyday life into an enduring legacy.

CROSSROADS OF A NATION: MISSOURI'S RIFTS, ROADS AND CIVIL RIGHTS traces Missouri's complex transformation from a battleground of Civil War loyalties to a keystone in America's mid-century modernization. Through archival images and expert commentary, the hour-long film explores how post-war reconstruction, the expansion of infrastructure and the long, unfinished fight for racial justice intersected across Missouri and helped shape American history. From the turmoil of border-state violence to the momentum of Route 66 and the grassroots power of the Civil Rights Movement, this documentary reveals how Missouri's history echoes the broader American story - complex, driven and still evolving.

Mindy Pet-Sits Sunspot/Treehouse ISS

Duration: 0:28:55

Mindy Pet-sits Sunspot - Sean, Sydney, Jet, and Carrot head out to view the Northern Lights. Mindy, upset she can't go, gets a boost - Sunspot stays back and agrees to let her be his pet-sitter. As the group in the saucer searches for, yet can't find, the Northern Lights, Sunspot and Mindy work on a backyard project - making their own amazing backyard "Northern Lights" display! Curriculum: Northern lights (aka, aurora borealis) are a natural, awesome phenomenon. The origin of the aurora begins when a cloud of gas is ejected from the Sun's surface. When it collides in Earth's atmosphere with oxygen and nitrogen, it produces dazzling auroral light. Treehouse ISS - When the kids realize that they all want to use the treehouse at the same time for different activities, arguments break out. Mindy tries to help by creating a schedule for each kid to use the treehouse alone. In the end, the kids realize they need each other's company and ideas in order to be successful in their own projects. In resolving their problem, the kids learn to think like the scientists on the International Space Station, who have to find a solution to the problem of getting along while doing different projects in a small space. Curriculum: The International Space Station (ISS) program is a great global human achievement in international cooperation. Countries work in partnership to support the experiments of scientists on the ISS, including observing space, growing plants in micro-gravity, and recording observations.
