Marching Forward
HD CC

Marching Forward

Duration: 0:56:41

MARCHING FORWARD shares the story of two high school band directors - one black, one white - whose love of music and dedication to their students inspired an atypical collaboration in the segregated south. Their friendship and professional cooperation resulted in the experience of a lifetime for two Orlando-area bands at the 1964 New York World's Fair. In the early 1960s, the Orlando community and its schools were still segregated. James "Chief" Wilson led the Jones Marching Tiger Band at the city's only black public high school. "Daddy" Del Kieffner directed the all-white Edgewater High School's Marching Eagle Band. Jones's band was regarded as Orlando's best, winning awards and receiving regular invitations to entertain at community and town events. When Edgewater received the sole invitation to perform at the World's Fair, Wilson and Kieffner launched efforts to fundraise simultaneously and campaign elected officials so both student bands could travel to New York. Interviews with former students, Kieffner's children, and Wilson and his family recount this chapter in Orlando's history - both the moments of unity forged in the community, as well as the challenges and inequities of the Jim Crow-era South.

The Cost of Caring

Duration: 0:56:46

Veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Veterinary Medical Association published a joint study in 2019 indicating that veterinarians were more likely to die by suicide compared with the general U.S. population. Female veterinarians were 3.5 times more likely, and male veterinarians were 2.1 times more likely to take their own lives than the average. Multiple stressors play a role, and most of the stress arises from the daily demands of their work, which include euthanizing beloved pets, a ceaseless drive towards perfection, a poor work-life balance, and being cyberbullied and vilified by disgruntled pet owners who feel the doctors don't respond quickly enough to meet their expectations. The collection of pressures they encounter lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and depression among this group of professionals who have dedicated their hearts and lives to caring for vulnerable animals. THE COST OF CARING is an hour-long documentary that explores the challenges veterinarians face and ways to address these obstacles.

The accumulation of wind-blown sand into a dune marks the beginning of one of Nature's most interesting and beautiful phenomena. In addition to the remarkable structure and patterns of sand dunes, they also provide habitats for a variety of wildlife. The arid regions of the southwestern United States contain a vast variety of dune systems. Visit three groups of sand dunes located on public land in the United States. First, explore a set of dunes that sit at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and are fenced in by two river systems complete with stands of Aspen trees. Learn how these river boundaries affect the nearby dunes and inspect the insects that call the dunes their home. Next, travel to the base of the Guadalupe Mountains in west Texas where a tiny gypsum dune system plays host to wildflowers on its edges and rodents living within. Finally, visit White Sands National Monument in New Mexico and examine ancient hearths built by Native Americans who made the trek to the dunes to escape the harsh mountain winters.
