Kumu Hina shares the inspiring story of Hina Wong-Kalu, a transgender native Hawaiian teacher, or kumu, who exemplifies Hawai'i's traditional acceptance of mahu - those who embody both male and female spirits. Produced by Emmy-winning directors Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson in partnership with ITVS and Pacific Islanders in Communications, the film charts Hina's journey from Collin Wong, a shy high school boy, to her current role as a married woman and cultural director at a school in one of Honolulu's grittier neighborhoods. When Ho'onani, a lively 6th-grade girl, requests to join the school's all-male hula troupe, Kumu Hina grants her the opportunity to express her inner male spirit. As teachers and students prepare for an important end-of-year public performance, they face many challenges but remain committed to the idea that staying true to oneself is what matters most.
