Ukranie:from Cold War to Hot War?

Duration: 0:28:32

# 2818 Ukraine: From Cold War to Hot War? Russia?s brutal war to overrun Ukraine has fallen short?at least to this point-- neither a military victory nor negotiated settlement seem near. Millions have been displaced, thousands of deaths, growing global food insecurity, and here at home inflation and rising prices at the pump. While the scope of Putin?s military objective may have been a surprise, the heightened tension between Russia and the West was not. Going back to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, could the West have done more to bring Russia into the West or was Putin?s admitted humiliation of seeing the Soviet Empire dissolve too deep that what we are witnessing now was inevitable. Joining McCuistion Host Jim Falk, to discuss the situation in the Ukraine is Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, a dedicated U.S. diplomat whose three decades of service included a posting in Moscow, and two tours in Ukraine the last as U.S. Ambassador; until she was fired by President Trump. You?ll also hear part of her conversation with Amb. Mark L Asquino, the president of Global Santa Fe that took place on her recent visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico..

The Fully Automatic Fun Hat: George wants to have a hat as fun as the Man with the Yellow Hat's yellow hat. But picking the right headgear is hard, and no one seems to recognize him in a fedora or Bavarian fishing hat. After a day of unsuccessful hat shopping George takes matters into his own hands and makes a super hat from craft supplies and toys right at home. Using levers, pop-up techniques and some trial and error, George engineers the Ultimate Yellow Monkey Fun Hat - fully equipped with food dispenser, prop launcher, and animal inflator. But what will happen when the Man accidentally wears the monkey hat at his big presentation? EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE: To show that everyone can design solutions to a problem, and that design is a creative process. Creatures of the Night: George thought it was odd that all the food was gone from the bird feeder in a single night. Who or what is eating it all? Could the small animal tracks be a clue? Determined to solve the mystery George stays up all night and finds a baby possum who has lost his family. The two set off on a night journey to find the possum's home and meet some other nocturnal animals (and some very tired "day animals"!) on the way. And because their night shadows strike a scary resemblance to the legendary Lake Creature of Lake Wannasink Lake - whose tale Mr. Quint is broadcasting to the entire town on this same night - the furry twosome cause quite a stir. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE: To illustrate some nocturnal animals, in contrast to diurnal, and their habits, specifically opossums. To show some specific characteristics of opossums; how and where they live, what they eat, some sounds and behaviors, defense mechanisms, and their relationships to some other animals.

From Zurich International, Jeff boards the Intercity Line at the airport train station and heads east. At the alpine city of Chur, he changes to the renowned Albula Bernia Express and savors the scenery scrolling by on the ride to his first destination. St. Moritz is legendary as one of the world's premier ski resorts. Alpine winter tourism was invented here in 1864 and St. Moritz has twice hosted the Olympic Winter Games. Jeff hits the slopes and discovers a wealth of options for downhill skiers of all abilities. The village is ringed by more than a few ski areas that are easily accessible by trains, state of the art gondolas and lifts, which serve up immaculate ski runs plus amenities that delight. Traveling aboard the Glacier Express, Jeff heads to the village of Zermatt and the world famous Matterhorn, a mountain of the Alps. Romantic, car free Zermatt pulses year round and is particularly enchanting in winter. Scores of 500 year old houses line the streets of the compact village. Zermatt nestles in a peaceful-and yet wild mountain world at the foot of the indomitable Matterhorn. Next, is a trip to the north aboard the Golden Pass Panoramic VIP Train in Montreux. Jeff's destination: Gstaad, a long-famous jet-set destination called the "last paradise in a crazy world" by actress Julie Andrews, a regular visitor. Known for five-star resorts, elegant shopping and fine dining, Gstaad still retains a genuine Alpine lifestyle too. There, Jeff tries his hand at fat-tire winter biking, ice stock curling, and hiking with a local outfitter that offers treks complete with traditional fondue from a gigantic wooden pot.

Bridging The Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race

Duration: 0:56:46

Thirty-five years before the election of President Barack Obama, the question of race and the possibility of bridging racial barriers were put to the test in an overlooked story in American politics: Tom Bradley's 1973 election as Mayor of Los Angeles: the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city with an overwhelmingly white majority. BRIDGING THE DIVIDE tells the story of how Bradley's coalition of African Americans, Jews, white liberals, Latinos and Asian Americans united a divided city, brought inclusion and access, and set the foundation for inter-racial coalitions that encouraged the elections of minority candidates nationwide, including President Barack Obama. At the same time, the film examines the complexities and contradictions of Bradley's career as a bridge builder. BRIDGING THE DIVIDE brings into sharp focus the issues of police abuse and police reform, and shows how Tom Bradley, a former police officer and a black mayor, could not break the cycles of poverty and despair that would ultimately spark the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest, and mark the end of his era. BRIDGING THE DIVIDE is the story of multi-ethnic Los Angeles finding its voice and identity in the face of discrimination and political disenfranchisement. And it is the story of the politics of race, and complexities of coalitions in a changing America.

Yellowstone at 150: Can Indigenous Stewardship Save Our Parks?

Duration: 0:26:46

150 years after Congress established Yellowstone National Park, it remains the jewel of a system that comprises some 400 national parks. But for Indigenous Americans, the history is bitter. Thousands were forced to leave, families were massacred, and the Army was brought in to exclude Native Americans. Today, as droughts, floods and fires threaten the parks, many are calling for Indigenous control. Indigenizing the National Parks wouldn't just be morally and legally right, but it just might be what saves the parks for future generations. Wes Martel of the Eastern Shoshone, and Valerie Grussing, Executive Director of the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers - fill Laura in on a recent Inter-Tribal Gathering that examined this question. And we'll hear closing remarks and a water prayer from Faith Spotted Eagle of Yankton Sioux Nation. Should non-Indigenous people even go to Yellowstone? Laura asks, and what do Indigenous people want for the future? "We're in this together for reconciliation and healing. When one of us isn't whole, then none of us are whole. It impacts all of us - the healing that needs to happen to address generational trauma." - Valerie Grussing "We must let people know we're still here. We're going to be here forever. And we want our rightful place in this, this country's economic and social picture." - Wes Martel Guests: Valerie Grussing: Executive Director, National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers; Wes Martel: Eastern Shoshone/Northern Arapaho; Senior Wind River Conservation Associate, Greater Yellowstone Coalition-Ft. "Downing of a Flag" is a two-hour documentary film that focuses on the Confederate Battle flag and its impact on the people, politics, and perceptions of South Carolina and beyond. Through firsthand interviews featuring various perspectives and a wealth of historical footage, "Downing of a Flag" traces the symbol's controversial relationship with the Palmetto State, exploring its true meaning and how an unspeakable tragedy served as the catalyst for its long-debated removal. The story begins with the end of the Civil War and chronicles the flag's more than 150-year journey from the blood-soaked battlefields of Virginia to its use in American popular culture in the 1970s and 1980s, to its final removal from the South Carolina State House grounds in July 2015. Preceded by the killing of nine black parishioners at Charleston's historic Mother Emanuel AME Church by a white supremacist, the Confederate Battle flag's furling and the days and actions that led to that event could represent the final shots and battles of the American Civil War. Despite representing an end to a significant chapter in United States history, "Downing of a Flag" shows that the events of 2015 did not complete the story. Instead, we continue to see the flag used as a symbol, and as a result, it continues to haunt American Democracy.
