Great Performances

Remember This

Duration: 1:56:46

Adapted from the play by Clark Young and Derek Goldman, and starring Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn in a virtuoso solo performance as World War II Polish resistance fighter Jan Karski in a genre-defying true story of a reluctant hero and Holocaust witness. After surviving the devastation of the Blitzkrieg, Karski swears allegiance to the Polish Underground and risks his life to carry the first eyewitness reports of war-torn Poland to the Western world, and ultimately, the Oval Office. Escaping a Gestapo prison, bearing witness to the despair of the Warsaw ghetto and confronted by the inhumanity of a death camp, Karski endures unspeakable mental anguish and physical torture to stand tall in the halls of power and speak the truth. Strathairn captures the complexity and legacy of this self-described "insignificant, little man" whose timely story of moral courage and individual responsibility can still shake the conscience of the world. The program also includes an exclusive behind-the-scenes companion film produced by The WNET Group's Exploring Hate initiative that examines the ongoing relevance of Jan Karski's story for today's world.

Sweet Tornado: Margo Jones and the American Theater

Sweet Tornado: Margo Jones and the American Theater

Duration: 0:56:46

Although few know her name today, theater producer-director Margo Jones left a rich cultural legacy. During the 1940s and '50s, Jones - nicknamed the "Texas Tornado" for her larger-than-life personality - pioneered the regional theater movement, championed the work of new playwrights, including Tennessee Williams, and crusaded against the commercial domination of New York theater. But despite her idealism, energy, warmth and salesmanship, Jones struggled with loneliness, frustration and doubt. Her untimely death at age 43 came just six months following her triumphant world premiere of the play, Inherit the Wind. SWEET TORNADO: MARGO JONES AND THE AMERICAN THEATER captures the remarkable life and times of this American visionary by weaving together theatrical representations and excerpts from three plays with interviews, archival photographs and rarely seen film footage. The powerful performance documentary, narrated by Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden, stars Judith Ivey as Jones and Richard Thomas as Williams.

Downing of a Flag

Part One

Duration: 0:57:46

"Downing of a Flag" is a two-hour documentary film that focuses on the Confederate Battle flag and its impact on the people, politics, and perceptions of South Carolina and beyond. Through firsthand interviews featuring various perspectives and a wealth of historical footage, "Downing of a Flag" traces the symbol's controversial relationship with the Palmetto State, exploring its true meaning and how an unspeakable tragedy served as the catalyst for its long-debated removal. The story begins with the end of the Civil War and chronicles the flag's more than 150-year journey from the blood-soaked battlefields of Virginia to its use in American popular culture in the 1970s and 1980s, to its final removal from the South Carolina State House grounds in July 2015. Preceded by the killing of nine black parishioners at Charleston's historic Mother Emanuel AME Church by a white supremacist, the Confederate Battle flag's furling and the days and actions that led to that event could represent the final shots and battles of the American Civil War. Despite representing an end to a significant chapter in United States history, "Downing of a Flag" shows that the events of 2015 did not complete the story. Instead, we continue to see the flag used as a symbol, and as a result, it continues to haunt American Democracy.
