From purges of the rolls, to efforts to eliminate same-day voter registration, new voter-ID laws, and vigilante style "election integrity" watchdogs turning up at the polls, voters in many states and tribal nations face serious challenges they're working hard to overcome. What's it all mean for the candidates and, more importantly, the millions of eligible voters of color whose ability to cast their vote could ultimately decide the outcome of this election? For this episode of our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura is joined by co-host Kadia Tubman of the Scripps News broadcast network, along with guests Chenjerai Kumanyika, NYU journalism professor and host of Empire City, a gripping new podcast on the origins of the NY police, and investigative journalist Christopher Lomahquahu of the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism within the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. Together we investigate who gets to vote safely, and who is being excluded from participating in democracy. Will all who want to vote be able to? ". . . Voter disenfranchisement has been so consistent that we might as well go ahead and call it a principle of American so-called democracy. Even in the constitutional convention, we know that there were efforts to make sure that not everyone can vote." - Chenjerai Kumanyika ". . . It wasn't until a hundred years ago that Native Americans were granted citizenship in this country . . . With the [groups] Western Native Voice, Arizona Native Vote, other organizations that you're finding across these different states, they understand that history but it hasn't deterred them from looking ahead as far as what they can do to activate those other voters, especially the youth . . ." - Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi) "Whenever I report on or hear about election integrity or election security, the phrase 'safe and secure' seems to tag along. It's almost like it's replacing the term free and fair elections . . ." - Kadia Tubman Guests: Chenjerai Kumanyika: Host, Empire City & NYU Professor; Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi): Investigative Reporter, ASU Howard Center for Investigative Journalism; Kadia Tubman: Disinformation Correspondent, Scripps News

We use world-class performance, fascinating interviews, footage of beautiful locations in southern Spain and similar visually compelling materials, to present the fundamental and perhaps surprising contributions of farm workers to the development and maintenance of flamenco. The featured farm workers are mostly gitanos (Spanish Gypsies) and elements of their history are woven into the narrative.
Episode #2 builds on episode #1 and is in the same style. This episode examines other occupations associated with flamenco, As before, the episode is filled with live performance. We continue to discuss significant aspects of gitano history while also reminding viewers of non-gitanos who contributed to the art form.
Episode #3 carries our audience in a somewhat different direction as we look at connections between flamenco and Spanish folklore, then examine the emotional force of the art form and present some singing of gitanos in India. This episode features performance, interviews and other visual materials, much like the prior episodes, but in this episode, we lean more heavily into the performance.
In our fourth and final episode, we examine the character of flamenco as opposed to flamenco fusion, and how flamenco fusion has affected traditional flamenco. We conclude that it is unclear whether or not traditional flamenco will survive, especially in view of the higher pay offered for fusion as opposed to a traditional flamenco performance, and the struggle many traditional artists face in trying to make a living.

The spirit of "mottainai" is all about cherishing items. This program visits someone who puts to use this traditional Japanese wisdom to lead a "Zero Waste Life." For the first episode, we meet Kuroda Yukiko, one of Japan's leading kintsugi artisans. Kintsugi is a technique for repairing ware by gluing broken parts with lacquer and painting gold or silver powder over it. In Western cultures, ware is repaired by trying to conceal the broken parts as much as possible to return the piece to its original state. However, kintsugi does the exact opposite by making the broken parts stand out and endowing a work with newfound beauty. It is said that the kintsugi technique originated in the Muromachi period around the 15th century. Kuroda's works, which continue to make use of traditional techniques, are garnering attention from across the world. Come witness Kuroda's precise technique and passion for kintsugi.
