Samantha Brown's Places to Love

Duration: 0:27:46

For more than 17 years, TV host Samantha Brown has been exploring all four corners of the world, visiting more than 260 cities in 62 countries, sharing her adventures and introducing new cultures to viewers. Now, the two-time Emmy Award-winner embarks on her next journey with her new travel series SAMANTHA BROWN'S PLACES TO LOVE. Unlike a traditional travelogue show with a formulaic itinerary, PLACES TO LOVE delivers decidedly refreshing and enriching travel experiences by taking viewers on a discovery of the emotional heart of travel and highlighting the people who are changing, challenging and strengthening a destination. From Brooklyn, New York and Monterey, California to Shanghai, China and Donegal in Ireland, Samantha seeks out the little-known spots and haunts where innovators and disrupters are creating a brand new travel experience. Whether it's through food and drink, art and design, culture or adventure, at the end of each episode, viewers will have a well-curated list of new experiences that focus on not just how to visit a destination, but how to fully immerse in it. The 13-part series encourages viewers to experience the passion of people and the soul of a place in a way that only traveling can do. Samantha's career as a television travel host happened by accident. A producer spotted her work in a commercial and recommended her to the Travel Channel in 1999 to audition for a new show called Great Vacation Homes. A decade of various series followed, including Great Hotels, Passport to Europe, Passport to Latin America, Samantha Brown's Asia, The Trip, 50/50, and many others. Samantha's fun-loving style has made her a beloved and engaging television personality whose approach is less expert and more a person you would want to travel with.

Gods and Monsters

Duration: 0:56:46

We uncover the story of our relationship with the skies from our earliest ancestors, through to the birth of the science of astronomy. Our story begins with one of the earliest known creation myths - the Babylonian Enuma Elish. With spectacular CGI animation, we see the clash of the gods Marduk and Tiamat that the Babylonians believed gave birth to the earth and the sky. In this episode we visit the caves of El Castillo in Northern Spain. Deep inside the caves we see some of the earliest cave paintings in the world. Astronomer Phil Plait shows us how the skies could be used to navigate and tell the time, either by observing the phases of the moon, or by tracking the movements of the sun across the horizon. We look at Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza and see that, as our earliest civilisations developed, we built monuments that enabled us to observe the skies and worship them. We visit Ancient Greece, where the great storytellers Hesiod and Homer were populating the world with gods and monsters. That is until the first philosophers started to look at the world not in terms of individual events that showed the actions of living gods in the sky, but as phenomena that were all part of the patterns of the natural world. As philosophy and early science start to reshape the world from mythological to rational, we are on the cusp of a revolution that gave birth to modern science.

Duration: 0:56:46

Narrated by actor Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), PELELIU: WWII's MOST WELL-PRESERVED BATTLEFIELD explores the impact that World War II had on a small island in the Palau archipelago in Micronesia. The remote island of Peleliu is considered the most well-preserved battlefield in the world - a living testament to one of the Marines' most bitter and eye-opening fights in World War II. Because it is illegal to remove any relic from the island, the battlefield remains almost as it was when the fight here ended in the fall of 1944. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Marine and Army battle, which was supposed to last three days but instead took 72 days of hard fighting to eliminate the Japanese from 500 caves on the island. While the film focuses on the island today, viewers also hear from Marines who had to battle on the ridges and in the valleys of Peleliu. It also explores how Cleared Ground Demining, a British organization working on the island today, is attempting to remove any live ordnance remaining from the fight on Peleliu. In just 10 years, the non-profit company has removed more than 60,000 bombs, hand grenades, mines, artillery shells, and other live munitions.

The documentary shares the riveting, true story of an American who joined the British SOE and was parachuted into France with a small team just after D-Day to organize the French Resistance into a cohesive army. The mission was to stop Germany's most feared troops from reaching Normandy in the days after the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. While missions such as this were classified as "Top Secret" by the American OSS and "Most, Most Secret" by Britain's SOE, some records were partially declassified in 1998, revealing the collective courage, risks, failures, and successes of the brave men and women who volunteered to be secret agents.
