Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on "Meet the BIPOC Press", we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media ("Justice Media Project"), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism? ". . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering." - Brooklyn Brown "I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional." - Magaly Urdiales Guests: Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather; Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media; Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, Documented

THE FIRST OFFICIAL THANKSGIVING tells the story of what some historians might call the first "official, English-speaking" Thanksgiving held in the Americas. At a meeting in London in 1618, Sir William Throckmorton, George Thorpe, John Smyth and Richard Berkeley gathered to form the Berkeley Company and discuss a land grant in the new world, given to them by King James I. The four Englishmen were to create a settlement in Virginia to be known as Berkeley Hundred. They chose Captain John Woodlief of Buckinghamshire, a ship's captain and a merchant trader who had been to the New World several times, to lead the expedition. Under Woodlief's command, the good ship Margaret left England on September 16, 1619 and reached the New World in two and a half months. On December 4, 1619, after an arduous voyage, a group of 36 men came ashore on the banks of the James River in Virginia. The group's charter required that the day of arrival be observed yearly as a "day of thanksgiving" to Almighty God for their safe passage to the New World. On that first day - a year before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock - Captain John Woodlief held the religious service of Thanksgiving. In 1931, Virginia history enthusiast Lyon Tyler (the fourth son of President John Tyler), accidently discovered the Nibley Papers in the New York Public Library, which recorded the historic 1619 voyage to the New World and the settlers' first Thanksgiving prayer. Through dramatic re-enactment and interviews from Graham Woodlief, a descendant of Capt. John Woodlief, Karla K. Bruno, author and biographer of Dr. Lyon Tyler, Chief Stephen Adkins of the Chickahominy Tribe, and several other individuals, THE FIRST OFFICIAL THANKSGIVING challenges the long-held belief that America's first Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth, Mass., and chronicles how the discovery of the Nibley papers led to a friendly rivalry between Virginia and Massachusetts about who can rightfully lay claim to the birth of America's Thanksgiving holiday.

The spirit of "mottainai" is all about cherishing items. This program visits someone who puts to use this traditional Japanese wisdom to lead a "Zero Waste Life." For the first episode, we meet Kuroda Yukiko, one of Japan's leading kintsugi artisans. Kintsugi is a technique for repairing ware by gluing broken parts with lacquer and painting gold or silver powder over it. In Western cultures, ware is repaired by trying to conceal the broken parts as much as possible to return the piece to its original state. However, kintsugi does the exact opposite by making the broken parts stand out and endowing a work with newfound beauty. It is said that the kintsugi technique originated in the Muromachi period around the 15th century. Kuroda's works, which continue to make use of traditional techniques, are garnering attention from across the world. Come witness Kuroda's precise technique and passion for kintsugi.
