"I think that our humanness is the single thing that cannot be replaced," says WSU medical student Grace McPhail. In "The Art of Medicine," NWPB explores how future doctors in the Northwest learn to value the human stories behind the science. The Human Condition course at WSU's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine blends medicine and the humanities, giving students tools for empathy while they develop personal artistic outlets--poetry, journaling, music-- to process what they encounter. Today's doctors have more resources and training than ever. But according to Judith Marcin and Farion Williams, Associate Deans of Clinical Education at WSU Vancouver and WSU Tri-Cities, medical practice itself is ill--and they want to help heal it, one student at a time.
