Sociology of Age and Aging (SOCY 240) examines various aspects of aging and society. The Smithsonian Project was divided into five steps. Students could explore any aspects of aging in the first generation immigrants starting from visiting National Museum of American History. We met at the Food Exhibit and students explored the whole or part of the museum based on their intellectual interest. Then they conducted an interview with a first generation immigrant who was old, preferably seventy or older. Finally they did literature search and integrated their museum visit, interview, and reading. Their theses varied such as intergenerational tension, cumulative disadvantage, downward movement, linguistic isolation, and multiculturalism and social services. I hope students had a good intellectual journey.
