THE MORGAN CHOIR: A JOYFUL CELEBRATION highlights one of the nation's most prestigious university choral ensembles and salutes Dr. Nathan Carter, who has led the choir for more than 32 years. Taped at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Maryland, this performance special features a diverse repertoire ranging from classical to gospel. The program opens with an a cappella version of the traditional spiritual "Elijah Rock" which demonstrates the choir' s hallmark style. A gospel rendition of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" is performed by counter-tenor Ernest Saunders. The classically inspired "It Is Well" features coloratura soprano Elizabeth Norman, winner of the 1996 Metropolitan Opera National Auditions, Kishna Davis, winner of the San Francisco Opera's 1995 Merola Program, and Kenniethia Redden-Mitchell, a masters candidate at Juilliard. "I Gotta Sing My Song" is given a stirring pop delivery by Tanya Blount, named Best New Artist of the Year by the '95 Soul Train Music Awards. Other performances include "Amazing Grace," "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Precious Lord." The curtain comes down on the choir and audience as they joining together to sing "Fair Morgan," the Morgan University song.
