Did you know that a 12-year-old boy was the first to discover a method for growing vanilla in Africa? Growing a vanilla pod is hard enough, and it then has to go through several scientific processes to make it taste like vanilla. A clever farmer who knows how to do this can multiply the value of a raw vanilla pod by fifty times! In this episode of N*gen, we visit a vanilla plantation in Uganda and look at how farmers can increase the value of vanilla pods, step by step, from the moment they grow them to the moment they sell them. We call this "the value chain," where we combine scientific knowledge with hard work and good business sense to make something more valuable. The vanilla we eat in ice cream, sweets, and cakes is the product of many different scientific processes, which is what makes it so delicious and valuable.
