During World War II, America was looking for locations to hold German prisoners of war. Located in the center of the nation, Oklahoma was the perfect choice. From 1943 to 1946, the state became a refuge for twenty thousand captured soldiers, with POW camps located at Fort Sill, Alva, Tonkawa, El Reno and several other towns.
