Global 3000 is Deutsche Welle's weekly magazine that explores the intersection of global development and the environmental and social conditions of the diverse cultures of the world. In each program, host Michaela Kufner presents three to four video-rich segments that profile a different part of the planet where man's quest for economic and industrial strength is jeopardizing the ecosystems and the social and economic structures of people thousands of miles away. The program not only documents where those struggles are taking place - but how some groups and individuals are finding solutions to the growing problems of global development.

The flapping of a butterfly's wings over Bermuda causes a rainstorm in Texas. Two sticks start side by side on the surface of a brook, only to follow divergent paths downstream. Both are examples of the phenome non of chaos, characterized by a widely sensitive dependence of the fu ture on slight changes in a system's initial conditions. This unit exp lores the mathematics of chaos, which involves the discovery of struct ure in what initially appears to be random, and imposes limits on pred ictability.
Explore various aspects of solid geometry. Examine platonic solids and why there are a finite number of them. Investigate nets and cross-sec tions for solids as a way of establishing the relationships between tw odimensional and threedimensional geometry.
Global energy use increases by the day. Polluting the atmosphere with ever more carbon dioxide is not a viable solution for our future energ y needs. Can new technologies such as carbon sequestration and ethanol production help provide the energy we need without pushing the concen trations of CO2 to dangerous levels?
Visit the only robotics magnet school in the Los Angeles school district, where robots are incorporated into every subject. City leaders in West Sacramento spearhead an effort to educate all their citizens, from preschool to college. This program on physics is the last of five programs in the science se ction of the GED Connection series, which helps prepare students for t he GED exam. Physics is the study of forces that move things. Matter i s anything that takes up space or has a mass. The program features gue sts of various disciplines who explain specific applications of physic s concepts. The first segment uses the physics of roller coasters to e xplain the three laws of motion. Energy is defined as the ability to d o work; work involves moving something by using a force at a distance. Potential and kinetic energy are discussed. There are three "Test Con nection" segments where the host underscores previous lessons dealing with the three laws of motion, the relationship between space flight a nd the laws of thermodynamics involving heat; and how to apply informa tion about sound waves in helping students to read charts on the GED e xam and beyond. A segment called "The Science of Sound" presents a phy sics teacher who also sings about such physics themes as the mechanics of sound waves. Also covered are distinctions between electricity and magnetism, as well as current and voltage. The electromagnetic spectr um consists of waves traveling at the speed of light, including visibl e light. Another feature is the use of electromagnetic waves by MRI te chnician.
Once released, air pollutants react chemically with each other under s olar radiation to become even more dangerous secondary pollutants. A c ompany in the Northeast U.S. tracks the emission of pollutants at stre et level, while an international long-term study follows plumes of pol lution from Mexico City across the continent and beyond.
