In Sync

Duration: 0:28:25

Systems of synchronization occur throughout the animate and inanimate world. The regular beating of the human heart, the swaying and near co llapse of the Millennium Bridge, the simultaneous flashing of gangs of fireflies in Southeast Asia: these varied phenomena all share the pro perty of spontaneous synchronization. This unit shows how synchronizat ion can be analyzed, studied, and modeled via the mathematics of diffe rential equations, an outgrowth of calculus, and the application of th ese ideas toward understanding the workings of the heart.

Video 5. Indirect Measurement and Trigonometry

Duration: 0:26:34

Learn how to use the concept of similarity to measure distance indirec tly, using methods involving similar triangles, shadows, and transits. Apply basic right-angle trigonometry to learn about the relationships among steepness, angle of elevation, and height-to-distance ratio. Us e trigonometric ratios to solve problems involving right triangles.

Kosciuszko, Von Steuben, and the Revolutionary War

Duration: 0:25:13

Dave begins this journey at the home of Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a Polish engineer who was a compatriot of Benjamin Franklin and became head engineer of the Continental Army. Leaving land and goods to the benefit of released American slaves, Thaddeus ultimately returned to Poland to participate in a revolution in his native country. At Germantown, Dave visits the house that General Howe successfully defended and tells the little-known story of George Washington returning General Howe's dog after the conflict. At Valley Forge, Dave recall the harsh winters of 1777 and 1778, when General Von Steuben transformed the beleaguered Revolutionary army into an 18th century fighting force.

Harmonious Math

Duration: 0:28:25

All sound is the product of airwaves crashing against our eardrums. Th e mathematical technique for understanding this and other wave phenome na is called the Fourier analysis, which allows the disentangling of a complex wave into basic waves called sinusoids, or sine waves. In thi s unit we discover how the Fourier analysis is used in creating electr onic music and underpins all digital technology.

Formulas

Duration: 0:26:40

This episode of GED Connection focuses on formulas. Formulas are writt en in the language of algebra using letters to stand for numbers. Thes e letters are called variables. A list of formulas will be supplied to the GED test taker but it is important to understand what the formula s mean in order to put them to use. The formulas covered in this progr am are: the formula for the area of a rectangle, how to calculate dist ance, circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of an object , and areas of two separate shapes or odd shapes. An architect shows t he viewer how she uses algebraic formulas to calculate the volume of a basement in an ancient building; and a construction manager goes thro ugh a series of formulas as he calculates the volume of a cylindrical hole and the cost of the concrete to fill it.
