All sound is the product of airwaves crashing against our eardrums. Th e mathematical technique for understanding this and other wave phenome na is called the Fourier analysis, which allows the disentangling of a complex wave into basic waves called sinusoids, or sine waves. In thi s unit we discover how the Fourier analysis is used in creating electr onic music and underpins all digital technology.

Arts teachers are aware of and respond to the many differences they fi nd among their students. In this session, participants meet a visiting theatre artist who takes advantage of the different backgrounds and l earning styles of ninth-graders to help them understand and embrace th e playwriting process. A visual art teacher brings together honors art students and students with disabilities, so they can learn from each other. As a music teacher works with different classes, she addresses needs common to all students. Finally, in a movement class for non-dan ce majors, teachers help students explore human anatomy.

Teens are speaking up against bullies through a Safe School Ambassadors program in Fairfield. Merced graduation rates are up, thanks to an effort to connect UC Merced students with middle schoolers. An alternative school in Napa is reaching students with innovative methods, from yoga to community service. Spend a day in the life of an elementary school principal in West Sacramento.
Dave visits Mount Vernon, Monticello and Montpelier recalling the achievements of the Presidents who lived there and their aims for the estates they called home. He highlights features of Georgian and Palladian architecture and provides insightful anecdotes associated with each home. These anecdotes concern the lives of African slaves and indentured servants, epithets on the graves of the tree Presidents, and stories of Dolley Madison's successes in Washington. Viewers gain an understanding of the private lives of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Madison.
