WHEN WIRE WAS KING: THE TRANSFORMATION OF COMMUNICATIONS puts the telecommunications revolution into historical context. Our everyday existence is nearly completely dependent on secure and reliable telecommunications, and as our digital ecosystem grows increasingly complex, it's critically important to understand what drives, threatens, and governs the technology we greatly depend on. Explore three interconnected themes - innovation, competition, and regulation - and the shifting balance among them that sparked the telecommunications revolution beginning in the early 1970s. The liberalization of regulations and opening of the telecommunications market covering satellite, cable, wireless, and telephony led to an explosion of innovation that brought us the Internet and wireless. Today, our reliance on these methods for commerce, technology, entertainment, travel, health, and all societal interaction are so complete that if the plug were pulled, our nation and the world would likely collapse. WHEN WIRE WAS KING: THE TRANSFORMATION OF COMMUNICATIONS is a visual journey through our telecommunications history, using archival photos, footage, newscasts, advertising, and entertainment clips to transport viewers. The film captures the story of this revolution through the voices of key players - innovators, economists, policy makers, industry executives, and Congressional leaders - and how their actions can inform us as we confront the global communications technologies and challenges of today.

FAT BOY: THE BILLY STEWART STORY chronicles the life and career of one of the most popular rhythm and blues singers of the 1960s, tracing his journey from a young piano player to a famous R&B balladeer. Growing up, Stewart's early passion and talent made him a Washington, D.C. legend, and he regularly sang in area nightclubs and other popular venues across the city. After meeting Bo Diddley in 1955, Stewart joined his band and headed to Chicago, where he first signed with Chess Records. However, it wasn't until the early '60s that Stewart began recording a string of hits, such as "Reap What You Sow," "Fat Boy," "I Do Love You" and "Sitting in the Park." Stewart's soulful music touched audiences all over the country, from New York to California and beyond. FAT BOY: THE BILLY STEWART STORY is narrated by former radio and television announcer Charlie Neal and features a rich collection of archival stills and footage, including never-before-seen 8mm film of Stewart relaxing with his family and performing in various night clubs. Interviews with prevalent musicians, friends, and family who were close to him - such as former Chess recording artist Curtis Prince, Herb Fame of the singing duo Peaches and Herb, Grace Ruffin from The Jewels, and Mitty Collier ("I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night") - also help paint a picture of his life and career. A special closing segment titled "Keeping the Legacy of Billy Stewart" describes the influence Stewart and his music continue to have on contemporary artists of R&B, hip-hop and go-go music.

Political violence is on the rise and has reached just about every corner of the country, whether it's confrontations on social media, at school board meetings or the chambers of Congress. Reuters reports that we've seen some 213 cases and 39 fatalities in the U.S. since January 6, 2021 - more than we've seen in decades. Women, people of color, Muslims, Jews, and LGBTQ people are among those most vulnerable, but the group seeing the fastest increase in reported incidents are conservatives who are perceived to be out of sync with the pro-Trump, MAGA line. While most Americans oppose political violence, it remains a growing threat to our democracy. What can be done? In this episode, co-hosts Laura Flanders and 22nd Century Initiative Director Scot Nakagawa convene an expert panel to define political violence and discuss how to protect one another and democracy itself. All that, plus Laura's commentary on "Reveal, Reframe, Resist" and reporters' roles. "As a child of a [Black] Panther, I saw inspiration in every action. Even when I saw my mother's friends being jailed for long periods of time or even killed by police terror . . . A lot of those folks went on to continue fighting against terror of the state and building community. I wanted to be a part of that . . ." - Sala Cyril "I undertook the study because political violence is a persistent problem in the United States that I think is a fundamental threat to our democracy. My view is that one of the greatest sources of power countering that threat is actually people in communities around the country." - Hardy Merriman "Violence has greatly limited our ability to function as an inclusive, robust, multiracial democracy that in fact, we must deal with it . . . We need to believe we can win, and we need to think about who it is that we need on our side . . ." - Scot Nakagawa "I can report anecdotally through different interactions with conservatives that they are experiencing political violence. I've been in attendance with secretaries of state, former Lieutenant governors. They all have stories of themselves or their families being on the receiving end of political violence . . ." - Maria J. Stephan Guests: Sala Cyril: Interim Executive Director, Vision Change Win; Organizer, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, NYC Hardy Merriman: Author, Harnessing Our Power to End (HOPE) Political Violence; Expert, Democracy Movements Scot Nakagawa (Co-host): Executive Director, 22nd Century Initiative & 22nd Century Conference Maria J. Story in the Public Square is a weekly, public affairs show designed to study, celebrate, and tell stories that matter. The show is inspired by the power of stories to shape public understanding of important issues. For example, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," shined a crucial light on the violence and inhumanity of American slavery, fueled the abolition movement, and inspired Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting the author, to say "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. From a great novel to a film, a song, or even a Tweet, stories still very much impact the way the American public looks at issues. Our show turns a critical eye to these stories and their tellers.
