What?s it like to go to jail at age 16 and then - 12 years later - return home? Onyx White is among some 1,700 people with criminal convictions released from Massachusetts prisons in 2022. Their experiences - rarely told and often hidden from public view - are the focus of the GBH News reporting project Life After Prison. The series continues with Don't Judge Me, a short documentary shot, produced and edited by GBH News' Rob Tokanel. Viewers get an intimate view of White's life as he works to launch a music career, find stable housing and - most importantly - avoid the parole violations that land many returning citizens back in jail. "The scary thing about parole is I don't have to do a crime to go back to jail - being around the wrong people or they can think I'm around the wrong person. You violate, you're going to the maximum security," he said. White went to jail in 2010 after he was arrested in the murder of 71-year-old Geraldo Serrano, a beloved convenience store clerk in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. White was 16 years old at the time of the shooting and ended up taking a plea deal that allowed him to be released from prison 12 years later.

Story in the Public Square is a weekly, public affairs show designed to study, celebrate, and tell stories that matter. The show is inspired by the power of stories to shape public understanding of important issues. For example, Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," shined a crucial light on the violence and inhumanity of American slavery, fueled the abolition movement, and inspired Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting the author, to say "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." Narrative is no less important today-though the vehicles for dissemination are much more diverse. From a great novel to a film, a song, or even a Tweet, stories still very much impact the way the American public looks at issues. Our show turns a critical eye to these stories and their tellers.
