Laura Flanders & Friends

Duration: 0:26:46

Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on "Meet the BIPOC Press", we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media ("Justice Media Project"), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism? ". . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering." - Brooklyn Brown "I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional." - Magaly Urdiales Guests: Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather; Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media; Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, Documented

Fine artist Anne Goetze brings her painterly eye for detail and deep love for our natural world to this poetic, meditative film that celebrates the beauty and healing power of nature. The hour-long film follows the cycles of the seasons in scenic Middle Tennessee, accompanied by narrated poetry and music. The calming visuals invite the viewer to be present by drawing attention to fleeting and otherwise unnoticed moments in the natural landscape - whether in the flow of water under an ice-encrusted surface or flowers rustling in a summer breeze. Interspersed between the changing of the seasons are expert insights that reflect on the importance of nature to our well-being and how important our love for the natural world is to its health and conservation.

GRAY WOLVES Wherever wolves share the landscape with livestock, there are going to be conflicts. We'll show you how a wide range of creative and collaborative people are working together to protect them both. "This American Land" host, wildlife biologist Ed Arnett shows us how an experiment with gray wolves is working. In December, 2023, 10 gray wolves were captured in northeast Oregon and relocated in Colorado, west of the Continental Divide. It's a story of some of the challenges in wildlife conservation, human coexistence with large carnivores, and the impact on the livelihoods of ranchers in the region. THE RIVERLORIAN Steven Marking is a "Riverlorian" ... a river historian, photographer, and filmmaker. He's an outspoken advocate for the Mississippi River. He travels the river, telling stories, and making music. His show, "A Visit from Will Dilg & Scenes from Our Mighty Mississippi" is a stage production that he created, wrote, and performs, to celebrate the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. His work with the Izaak Walton League has helped protect hundreds of miles of the river. DAVE SHOWALTER - CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHER And another river expert a bit to the West ....Dave Showalter is a photographer with a special eye on how important rivers are to all living things. He explores the development of a new contract for the Colorado River, one that combines new technology, and restores many of our western rivers for wildlife and recreation. He also tackles the difficult challenge of recalibrating water consumption. Showalter's stunning photographs are part of his book, "Living River: Creating a Resilient Watershed." BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY The Blue Ridge Parkway runs more than 400 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. Local governments, NGOs and public-private partnerships are helping link the rural communities it traverses, making sure their waters stay clean and their inspiring views are unimpeded. Threats to the region include housing development, and erosion from building sites. Outdoor lovers are working with the U.S. Forest Service and private landowners to protect these lands for wildlife and outdoor recreation.

His life and art are discussed in the film by a handful of his peers and fans, including artists Dread Scott, Luis Grachos, and Charo Oquet, along with Perez Art Museum director Franklin Sirmans, gallerist Genaro Ambrosino, and curator Christine Y Kim, among others. The film explains how his work was preserved by his cousin in her garage for two decades until it was rediscovered by two curators - Melissa Levin and Alex Fialho, who have worked tirelessly to bring it back into the public eye.

Nature Cat can't wait to get outside for a day of backyard nature excursions and bravery, but there's one problem: He's still a house cat with no instincts for nature. Like many of today's kids, Nature Cat is eager and enthusiastic about outside activities, but is at times intimidated by them. With the help of his animal friends, Nature Cat embarks on action-packed adventures that include exciting missions full of nature investigation, "aha" discovery moments and humor, all while inspiring children to go outside and "play the show."
