This popular Southwest Florida destination hasn't always been a bed of convenience and luxury. In the early days, the county was isolated and had no doctors. The first pioneers traveled a day or more to see doctors in Key West or Ft. Myers. By 1929, Collier County got its first hospital in Everglades City, but it took nearly 30 more years for a medical community to start developing.
