First broadcast on PBS beginning in 2018, AARP The Magazine's Movies for Grownups Awards were established to celebrate and encourage filmmaking with unique appeal to movie lovers with a grownup state of mind - and recognize the inspiring artists who make them. Each year the centerpiece honor is the Career Achievement Award; to-date, the five Movies for Grownups Awards presentations on PBS have honored cinema legends Helen Mirren, Shirley MacLaine, Annette Bening, George Clooney and Lily Tomlin. With the Movies for Grownups awards ceremony going on hiatus in 2024 following the awards season turmoil created by the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes, GREAT PERFORMANCES will resume the Movies for Grownups Awards franchise in 2025.
