When Things Get Tough

The War

When Things Get Tough

Duration: 1:57:33

"When Things Get Tough" (January 1943 - December 1943) - By January 1943, Americans have been at war for more than a year. The Germans still occupy most of Western Europe; the Allies can't agree on a plan or timetable to dislodge them. American troops, including Charles Mann of Luverne, are now ashore in North Africa. At Kasserine Pass, Erwin Rommel's seasoned veterans quickly overwhelm the poorly led and ill-equipped Americans, but after George Patton assumes command, the Americans begin to beat back the Germans. In the process, thousands of soldiers learn to adopt the outlook that "killing is a craft," as reporter Ernie Pyle explains to readers back home. Across the country, in cities such as Mobile and Waterbury, nearly all manufacturing is converted to the war effort. Like millions of other women, Emma Belle Petcher of Mobile enters the industrial work force, becoming an airplane inspector, while her city struggles to cope with a population explosion. In Europe, thousands of American airmen are asked to brave flak and German fighter planes on daylight bombing missions over enemy territory. All of them, including Earl Burke of Sacramento, know that each time they return to the air their chances of surviving the war diminish. Allied troops invade Sicily and then southern Italy. With them is Babe Ciarlo of Waterbury, whose division loses 3,265 men in 56 days of fighting - and moves less than 50 miles. As 1943 ends, Allied leaders draw up plans for the long-delayed invasion of Europe; Hitler put tens of thousands of laborers to work strengthening his coastal defenses. For the people of Mobile, Sacramento, Waterbury and Luverne, things are bound to get tougher still.

As part of the cultural celebration he makes traditional rice dumpling, learns the myths behind the dragon boat legend and design and speaks with participants in the local races on Lamma Island. On Cheung Chau, one of Hong Kong's 263 islands, he greets the early morning fishing boats, witnesses the islander's art of fish ball making, climbs through a UNESCO reserve and relaxes on the beach. For this one episode, we let our "talent" choose content. Historian John Gurda wanted to tell you about one of his favorite places on earth, Seminary Woods. Sports guy Mike McGivern couldn't choose between Milwaukee King High School baseball and the Running Rebels, so we did both. And John McGivern is FULL of ideas, so we had to narrow his list to food, classics and "who knew?" segments. We only allowed two food choices (not the 10 he originally suggested!): Mr. Dye's Pies and C-viche. This episode's Milwaukee classics are Summerfest, the SV Denis Sullivan, Foamation, Inc. (a.k.a., the Cheesehead Factory), and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. And the "who knew" ideas that we loved include Olympus Group Mascot Division, MATC's Dental Technician program, Yellow Wood Gear and Cobalt Glass. We love Milwaukee County. Mayor Barrett, get ready to come up with a different 30 seconds for next season because we may do this every year from now on!

And he ran the Olympic Torch on its way to Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Corridor Four is a documentary that illustrates Isaac's story in the aftermath of 9/11. After all the news cameras had turned off and all the lights had dimmed, Isaac was left only with the horrific images he had seen and the memory of those he was unable to save. BLOODLINE is an intimate profile of Vietnamese-American chef Tu David Phu and the evolution of his culinary aesthetic - borne from a bloodline that traces back through childhood and his family's unspoken history of war. The film's narrative is framed around Tu as he returns home to Oakland, California after competing on the cooking series Top Chef (Season 15). As he reflects on that experience and his new visibility as a celebrity chef, Tu traces his unlikely journey. From the son of refugees growing up in West Oakland to a professional chef, Tu's acclaimed culinary creations are heralded as the next wave of Asian fusion representing Vietnamese culture. The documentary features illuminating conversations between Tu and his parents on their initial reservations about his career path, their pride in his success in the food industry, and how their experiences during the Vietnam War influenced Tu's upbringing and cooking style. Beyond a personal examination of family ties and food heritage, BLOODLINE is also an exploration of how in placing a premium on pedigree and formal training, the culinary industry often disregards the rich experiences, flavors and practices falling outside those parameters. This is illustrated by how the physical bloodline of the fish - running down the middle of the fillet - is often thrown away by chefs even though it carries the animal's "essence."

Not to worry, the Man just wrote a book to make people aware that the bird needs assistance. But unfortunately, stores don't want to carry the book because, at 1,400 pages, it looks like a boring scientific tome. Fortunately, George runs into Steve who has lots of idea for promoting his lemonade stand. This prompts George to come up with an idea of his own -- paint an empty billboard with a razzle-dazzle picture to help promote the book. Easier said than done and even when done, will it help sell the book and spread the bird word? Juicy George - George has never seen a farmer's market before and finding one on his doorstep is just about the best thing ever -- until he drinks Juicy Jay's special blended juice and then that's the best thing ever! When the farmer's market leaves and there's no more juice, the Man with the Yellow Hat and George decide they need their own juicer. It's certainly not as easy as it seems and certainly not a mess-free process!
