The notion of building the longest canal in the world, by a nation low on skills and limited resources, was considered ridiculous by many. The United States had no engineering school in the early 1800s, and no qualified European engineer would take the job. The task of designing and building the Erie Canal fell to upstate New York residents, most of whom had never seen a canal.
In the early 19th century, Lockport, New York, was one of the most recognizable places in the nation. Located in Western New York, it is home to the Erie Canal - celebrating its 200th anniversary this year - and the famous Flight of Five Locks, a lock system that lifts boats over the Niagara Escarpment. The Flight of Five Locks was the final and crowning achievement of the construction of the Erie Canal, which was completed in 1825. For Lockport, the Flight of Five Locks represents the city's origin story, and currently, through a community-based effort, the extant Flight of Five Locks is being rehabilitated and restored. For the residents of Lockport, who witnessed their city's decline after years of urban renewal, the restoration represents a reconnection with their history and a recognition of the city's pivotal role in the national saga. By focusing on Lockport and the Flight of Five, AMERICA'S STAIRWAY explores the Erie Canal's contributions to America and offers insight into its regional significance.
The Erie Canal was an engineering marvel in its time and remains so today. This documentary travels from Palmyra to the Genesee River, stopping along the way to visit the people and places that make the canal so special. Canal historian Thomas Grasso offers insight into the canal?s past while the Golden Eagle String Band provides the music track.
This documentary examines the spread of ideas along the Erie Canal, with an emphasis on women's rights, suffrage, and the quest for social justice.
The film tells the story of industrial expansion and decline along the Erie Canal, and examines its impact on the lives of workers in steel, grain, textiles, and shipping. In the wake of economic collapse, can the people of America's cities find meaning and worth?
Two hundred years ago, the Erie Canal became the nation's first great technical innovation.
