Dave Van Ronk is one of the central names in a movement which flourished in Greenwich Village during the late 1950's and early '60's, and nurtured such performers as Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkle, and Phil Ochs. A colorful, bawdy personality, Van Ronk emerged as one of the most distinctive folk performers in an era considered by many to be the heyday of American folk music. With a voice which is tough and gravelly, Van Ronk cuts through songs like "Candy Man" and Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going" with a unique sense of tender devestation. In segments taped on the streets of New York, Van Ronk explores the clubs and night spots which, 20 years ago, led to the rebirth of American urban folk music.
