Humphrey Bogart fires this comedy thriller with his dry wit, a perfect match to the equally talented screenwriter Truman Capote and director John Huston. Bogart is Billy Dannreuther, who is associated with four "brilliant criminals at the climax of their most brilliant effort." They include Peterson (Robert Morley), O'Hara (Peter Lorre) and the vituperative Major Ross (Ivor Barnard) who have concocted a scheme to get uranium out of British East Africa. Their trip to Africa aboard a trouble-prone steamer is delayed and Billy gets involved with Harry and Gwendolyn Chelm, an upper class, seemingly proper, British couple. It turns out they are also seeking the uranium in Africa and Major Ross attempts to murder Harry. They are shipwrecked when the steamer sinks and are captured by Arabs when they wash ashore. They face certain death when the major spouts off to their chief interrogator. Billy saves the day by convincing the chief that he can fix him up with his idol, Rita Hayworth. Harry, who has disappeared overboard, makes contact by telegram advising the group that he has purchased the uranium rich land!
