FAT BOY: THE BILLY STEWART STORY chronicles the life and career of one of the most popular rhythm and blues singers of the 1960s, tracing his journey from a young piano player to a famous R&B balladeer. Growing up, Stewart's early passion and talent made him a Washington, D.C. legend, and he regularly sang in area nightclubs and other popular venues across the city. After meeting Bo Diddley in 1955, Stewart joined his band and headed to Chicago, where he first signed with Chess Records. However, it wasn't until the early '60s that Stewart began recording a string of hits, such as "Reap What You Sow," "Fat Boy," "I Do Love You" and "Sitting in the Park." Stewart's soulful music touched audiences all over the country, from New York to California and beyond. FAT BOY: THE BILLY STEWART STORY is narrated by former radio and television announcer Charlie Neal and features a rich collection of archival stills and footage, including never-before-seen 8mm film of Stewart relaxing with his family and performing in various night clubs. Interviews with prevalent musicians, friends, and family who were close to him - such as former Chess recording artist Curtis Prince, Herb Fame of the singing duo Peaches and Herb, Grace Ruffin from The Jewels, and Mitty Collier ("I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night") - also help paint a picture of his life and career. A special closing segment titled "Keeping the Legacy of Billy Stewart" describes the influence Stewart and his music continue to have on contemporary artists of R&B, hip-hop and go-go music.

Are you planning to vote in the presidential election? It's quite possibly the most important election in our lifetimes - and yet some Americans may forgo voting this November. Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have serious problems. How do we square the contradictions when casting our vote, and how should we think about elections altogether? As National Director of the Working Families Party (WFP), Maurice "Moe" Mitchell is interacting with voters on the ground and supporting candidates who've come out for a ceasefire in Gaza. The WFP's bottom-up, third party approach is winning. What is he seeing and what is his advice in this critical election year? For starters, he says "supporting a candidate is a chess move. It's not a valentine". He joins Laura Flanders and returning co-host Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Senior Minister at Middle Church in New York City, to break it all down. All that, plus a commentary from Laura. "The Working Families Party is a political party that is building power for working class people of all races. We believe in a country for the many, not the few. We believe that in a democracy the people should govern, not corporations and the wealthy. And the way that we do it is we're building a bottom-up, third-party approach." - Maurice "Moe" Mitchell "Some of us are not listening . . . [Trump] intends to join a fascist campaign . . . If we're thinking of the long game, we have to ask ourselves which of these candidates has the most propensity to help us build a movement for the 20 years that we need to, or for seven generations." - Rev. Kelly introduces the season by sitting down with Dr. Atul Gawande, Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, and Dr. Dani Dumitriu to discuss mental health and well-being in America today. They speak on three principal factors that play a role in shaping our wellness: nature (our genetics), nurture (the environment we're raised in), and choice (healthy behaviors we do or don't engage in on a regular basis). Our experts add an important caveat that our choices occur within a context. And that context is constantly changing, evolving and shaping our choices, whether we're aware of it or not.
Kelly has a conversation with Dr. Dima Amso, professor of psychology at Columbia University, about how the quality of nurture we receive as children influences our well-being in the long term. Dr. Amso, whose research examines the human brain and cognitive development, gives her take on the challenges of social media, how to be a better consumer of science journalism, and what we can do as society to support childhood development at school and at home. She also shares how what she has learned in the lab influences her values and priorities as a parent.

MAJOR LEAGUE CUBAN BASEBALL traces the experiences of Cubans at the most accomplished levels of America's national pastime - baseball - and explores their deep cultural and emotional connection to the game. In 1874, the first official baseball game was held on the island of Cuba, in defiance of Spanish colonial law. After Cuba gained its independence from Spain, the sport became an integral part of the Cuban identity. The program documents Cuban ball players' presence in the budding American professional leagues of the late 1800s, and their impact on American baseball in the early 20th century. Between 1911 and 1929 alone, 17 Cuban-born Caucasian players played in the major leagues, while Afro-Cuban players integrated into the Negro leagues and became prominent fixtures. The documentary also delves into baseball in post-revolution Cuba, when professional sports were banned on the island and many players made the difficult decision to leave for the U.S. For the hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles who fled their country, baseball served as an elixir and the Cuban big leaguers were their heroes. In the 1970s, amateur baseball began to thrive again in Cuba, while in the U.S., Cuban players continued to have significant impact on the majors - from Tony Perez and Luis Tiant facing off in the 1975 Fall Classic to the players who are making their mark today. Weaving archival footage with interviews from historians, baseball fans, journalists, and former major leaguers Camilo Pascual, Orestes Destrade, and Tony Perez, MAJOR LEAGUE CUBAN BASEBALL chronicles the history of Cubans in the major leagues, documents the influence of baseball on Cuban culture, and examines the impact of Cubans and Cuban-Americans on the game.
