One problem: nobody was surviving that long. The odds of completing a six month combat tour was only 28 percent. Against all odds the Memphis Belle survived the gauntlet. And thanks to a documentary film by the legendary William Wyler, the Belle and her crew became stateside celebrities. But at wars end, the Belle was in an airplane boneyard waiting to be cut up and melted down. Saved by the city of Memphis, it spent there nearly 60 years there.
