In the bleak and desolate days of the depression of the 1930s, the residents of Waterloo, Ohio, had little about which to be happy. In this rural Appalachian town, 20 miles outside of Ironton, residents had been hit hard with job losses and did whatever they could to make a living. The depression was on everyone's minds until the Waterloo Wonders. The boys in Waterloo got a little creative when it came to entertaining themselves. They tied rags together to make a basketball, hung bushel baskets in a barn, and learned to play the game of basketball with a ball that wouldn't bounce. What came out of this endeavor was a group of boys who learned how to pass the ball so proficiently that no opponent could stop them. Individually, they were good basketball players, but together they made history, as they become Class B state champions in 1934 and 1935. Their story is the focus of a documentary "The Eighth Wonder: The Waterloo Wonders". Produced by WOUB's Cheri Russo, see how a small group of farm boys from Waterloo, Ohio, overcame obstacles to give hope to a region that had suffered greatly during one of the most difficult times in American history.
After the Miami and Shawnee Indians were defeated by General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, settlement began in the Cowan Lake Region. In 1797, the first settler in the area, William Smalley, began clearing land for his home along the river which was later dammed to form Cowan Lake. Cowan Creek was named for the area's first surveyor, John Cowan. A dam was completed across Cowan Creek in 1950, and in 1968, Cowan Lake was dedicated as a state park. Cowan Lake State Park is home to the American Lotus water lily. Swimming, fishing, sailing and canoeing are popular and numerous hiking trails are available through the park's 1,075 acres. This weekly nature program explores Ohio's natural resources and outdoor activities. Each program features several different activities and topics, plus weekly cooking amd backyard wildlife segments. Produced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Riders age 9-18 from all around Ohio participated in the Jr. Horse Show at the Ohio State Fair. In hunt seat equitation classes, participants are asked to complete a pattern that demonstrates control over their horse and are also judged at the walk, trot and canter at both directions. Classes included in this coverage are: Class 16 - Hunter Pony, ages 9-18; Class 17 - Hunter Horse, ages 9-11; Class 18 - Hunter Horse, ages 12-13; and Class 19 - Junior Championship, ages 9-13. From the very first Fair held in Cincinnati in 1850, which lasted only three days, to the 12-day exposition of today, the Ohio State Fair has celebrated Ohio's products, its people and their accomplishments. The first Ohio State Fair was planned for September 1849, but an outbreak of Asiatic cholera forced cancellation of those plans. The following year, later dates were set to lessen the risk of cholera. Even so, Darius Lapham, the superintendent of the grounds, died of the disease just a few weeks before the opening date. Camp Washington (two miles east of downtown Cincinnati) was the site of the first Ohio State Fair, Oct. 2 - 4,1850. In 1886, the Fair moved to its current home at what is now called the Ohio Expo Center.
4-H Agility is a team sport that youth and their dogs participate in together. Patterned after the equestrian sport of show jumping, youth and their dogs learn to work together as a team to negotiate the course for standard classes or strategize a plan for optimum performance in games. Agility trials afford owners the opportunity to demonstrate a dog's physical ability and soundness, and willingness under a variety of conditions. 4-H agility gives opportunity for handler and dog teams to develop confidence, problem solving skills, patience, and responsibility. Ohio 4-H Agility Purpose and Vision: Create an environment for positive youth development through the relationship between dog and handler teams as they interact and enjoy the sport of dog agility; Encourage development of life skills such as relationship building, cooperation, responsibility, problem solving, critical thinking and decision making; Cultivate an atmosphere of collaboration between interested youth, their dogs, and caring, safe and experienced adults; Provide opportunities for youth to exhibit skills in a positive environment at the club, county, and state levels; and Provide support for volunteers and youth to continue to "Make the Best Better."

Nature Cat can't wait to get outside for a day of backyard nature excursions and bravery, but there's one problem: He's still a house cat with no instincts for nature. Like many of today's kids, Nature Cat is eager and enthusiastic about outside activities, but is at times intimidated by them. With the help of his animal friends, Nature Cat embarks on action-packed adventures that include exciting missions full of nature investigation, "aha" discovery moments and humor, all while inspiring children to go outside and "play the show."
When an egg hatches and an unfamiliar bird emerges, Sparks' Crew vows to reunite the young bird with its parents. After some trial and error, they observe similarities and differences between young animals and their parents to find the baby bird's family. After learning all the steps and how nature plays a significant role in making paper, the kids realize that it's important not to waste it. This inspires them to finish their story by drawing on the back of their old paper. Bath Time - After Ari's parents let him skip bath time, he's determined to never have a bath again. This makes Elinor, Ari and Olive ask the question, why do we have to take baths anyway? They learn all about the different ways animals keep themselves clean, but Ari is still adamant about never bathing again. That is, until he starts to get really sticky and itchy, which disrupts his playtime. He finally gives in to bath time and makes himself squeaky clean, but don't worry, he'll have plenty time to get dirty again tomorrow!
