Zig Zag Plant - A mystery is afoot at Elinor's school when one of the class plants grows in an unusual shape. Instead of growing straight up like the other plants, this plant is growing in a zig-zag pattern. Elinor and her friends investigate what could have happened to this plant to make it grow like that. After learning that most plants always grow up towards the sky, the kids piece together the clues and discover that this plant spent some time on its side, and then some time right side up, resulting in the zig-zag pattern! The kids love the shape of this plant, and name it "the Zig Zag Plant." Butterfly Drinks - Insect Day is coming up at school and Elinor couldn't be more thrilled to finish her home-made butterfly costume. However, she quickly runs into a problem, because she can't drink anything when her hands are busy being the wings in her costume! Elinor sets out to solve the problem with her dad by learning how real butterflies drink. After some careful watching, she realizes that a butterfly doesn't even have a mouth, but a proboscis, which looks like a long straw, and that's how they drink nectar from a flower! This gives Elinor the idea to add a super long drinking straw to complete her costume.
NATURE CAT follows Fred, a house cat who dreams of exploring the great outdoors. In each episode, once his family leaves for the day, Fred transforms into Nature Cat, "backyard explorer extraordinaire." Miguel's soccer team has made it to the championships, and he's nervous. Maya has a great idea to quell his nerves: intensive training the morning of the game. Miguel is skeptical of Maya's idea, worried that he might be late to catch the bus to the game, but Maya assures him she will keep him on schedule. Unfortunately, she fails; Miguel misses the bus. He fumes and blames Maya and her "big ideas", which always cause grief. Maya defends her big ideas, while also promising Miguel to get him to the game on time. Maya and Miguel go on a transportation-hopping adventure as they take trains, trucks, buses and finally a horse and carriage, in a desperate effort to get Miguel to the game on time. Through it all Maya asserts that the reason her ideas work is that she believes in the person she's trying to help. In the end they make it to the game, Miguel helps his team win the Championship, and finally admits that Maya's ideas are big and beautiful.
Maya learns that Fabian's new play centers around a 10-year-old girl. Maya is determined to get the part... it's perfect for her! After all, she's a 10-year-old girl! She goes all out to convince Fabian that he should pick her, which he finally does. Maya's thrilled... until she learns that the main character sleeps through the whole play! She switches gears, trying to get others to swap roles with her, but fails. Finally she decides that sleeping in a bed is not her idea of acting, and quits the play. Rosa counsels her to see her commitments through, and a guilty Maya goes back to the auditorium, just in time to crawl into bed and be the "star" of the play. Despite the fact that she has no lines, Maya has fun, and learns the value of keeping her promises.
When the usually meticulous Rosa scorches the family breakfast, Maya thinks the apartment is cursed with bad luck. Using Maggie's grandmother's Guide to Feng Shui (which they don't really have time to read thoroughly), Maya, Miguel and the gang redecorate the entire place in an effort to restore positive energy before Santiago brings home an important supplier for dinner that evening. But at dinner that night, the kids' freshly painted walls, makeshift Asian fountains, and rearranged furniture cause a lot more harm than good.
One evening, after Maya sees Abuela Elena dancing alone after dinner, she decides that her grandmother's cheery exterior is masking a deep loneliness - and that Abuela Elena needs to be fixed up on a date. Maya's big idea launches a quest for an eligible sixty-something bachelor, the mother of all makeovers, and a blind date that doesn't go as planned.
Miguel recalls the time that a new kid moved into the neighborhood: Andy. As we all know, Andy's missing an arm. Maya, eager to make Andy feel comfortable in their group, tries to steer the boys away from playing sports because she assumes that Andy won't be able to participate. This results in the proverbial unstoppable force (Maya) meeting the immovable object (Miguel and his boys trying to play ball). And besides, the boys don't seem to have any problem with playing ball with Andy. In the end, Maya learns that true sensitivity means treating others as equals.
When Paco unwittingly destroys Miguel's favorite Orlando Cruz baseball card, Maya decides to fix the situation by getting an autograph from Orlando himself, who is coming to town that weekend with his team. They seek shelter, and Don discovers an entrance to a cave below their nest, where not only the Pteranodons, but also their other neighbors, the Lambeorsaurus family and Cindy Cimolestes, all take shelter for the night. In the morning, the storm has passed, but everyone must pitch in to rebuild their various nests. The family is cleaning up the mess left over from the hurricane, and discover that a raft of logs has washed up two refugees from across the Western Interior Sea - a turtle named Aidan Adocus, and a small mammal named Tommy Ptilodus. Our family learns of their adventure, crossing the sea in the storm, and washing up at Pteranodon Terrace. They decide to take their new friends to the Dinosaur Train, and ride back with them to their home in Appalachia.

Maya learns that Fabian's new play centers around a 10-year-old girl. Maya is determined to get the part... it's perfect for her! After all, she's a 10-year-old girl! She goes all out to convince Fabian that he should pick her, which he finally does. Maya's thrilled... until she learns that the main character sleeps through the whole play! She switches gears, trying to get others to swap roles with her, but fails. Finally she decides that sleeping in a bed is not her idea of acting, and quits the play. Rosa counsels her to see her commitments through, and a guilty Maya goes back to the auditorium, just in time to crawl into bed and be the "star" of the play. Despite the fact that she has no lines, Maya has fun, and learns the value of keeping her promises.
When the usually meticulous Rosa scorches the family breakfast, Maya thinks the apartment is cursed with bad luck. Using Maggie's grandmother's Guide to Feng Shui (which they don't really have time to read thoroughly), Maya, Miguel and the gang redecorate the entire place in an effort to restore positive energy before Santiago brings home an important supplier for dinner that evening. But at dinner that night, the kids' freshly painted walls, makeshift Asian fountains, and rearranged furniture cause a lot more harm than good.

Miguel recalls the time that a new kid moved into the neighborhood: Andy. As we all know, Andy's missing an arm. Maya, eager to make Andy feel comfortable in their group, tries to steer the boys away from playing sports because she assumes that Andy won't be able to participate. This results in the proverbial unstoppable force (Maya) meeting the immovable object (Miguel and his boys trying to play ball). And besides, the boys don't seem to have any problem with playing ball with Andy. In the end, Maya learns that true sensitivity means treating others as equals.
When Paco unwittingly destroys Miguel's favorite Orlando Cruz baseball card, Maya decides to fix the situation by getting an autograph from Orlando himself, who is coming to town that weekend with his team. The Ghost Front - (December 1944 - March 1945) By December 1944, Americans have become weary of the war their young men have been fighting for three long years; the stream of newspaper headlines telling of new losses and telegrams bearing bad news from the War Department seem endless and unendurable. In the Pacific, American progress has been slow and costly, with each island more fiercely defended than the last. In Europe, no one is prepared for the massive counterattack Hitler launches on December 16 in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxemburg. Tom Galloway of Mobile, Burnett Miller of Sacramento and Ray Leopold of Waterbury are there, among the Americans caught up in the biggest battle on the Western Front - the Battle of the Bulge. Back home, Katharine Phillips of Mobile and Burt Wilson of Sacramento are shocked to see newspaper headlines showing the Germans on the offensive and begin to wonder, "Are we losing now that we're this close?" Meanwhile, at Santo Tomas Camp in Manila, thousands of internees, including Sascha Weinzheimer of Sacramento, are now starving, desperately trying to hold onto life long enough to be liberated. At Yalta, Allied leaders agree on a plan to end the war that includes massive bombing raids aimed at German oil facilities, defense factories, roads, railways and cities. In March alone, Allied warplanes drop 163,864 tons of bombs on Germany - almost as much as they have dropped in the preceding three years combined. In the Pacific, Allied bombers are ready to batter Japan as well - but first, the air strip on Iwo Jima, an inhospitable volcanic island halfway between Allied air bases on Tinian and the Japanese home islands, needs to be taken. There the Marines, including Ray Pittman of Mobile, face 21,000 determined Japanese defenders, who, with no hope of reinforcement or re-supply, have been ordered to kill as many Americans as possible before being killed themselves. After almost a month of desperate fighting, the island is secured, and American bombers are free to begin their full-fledged air assault on Japan. In the coming months, Allied bombings will set the cities of Japan ablaze, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving millions homeless. By the middle of March 1945, the end of the war in Europe seems imminent. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are crossing the Rhine and driving into the heart of Germany, while the Russians are within 50 miles of Berlin. Still, back in Luverne, Al McIntosh warns his readers to keep their heads down and keep working "until there is no doubt of victory any more" because "lots of our best boys have been lost in victory drives before."
