For the Navajo and Hopi, running is much more than a sport, it is woven into the cultural fabric of their lives. Encouraged by their elders, many Navajos and Hopis begin running at an early age - to greet the morning sun, to prepare for a ceremony or simply to challenge themselves in the vast, southwestern landscape. In the rugged canyon lands of Northern Arizona, Navajo and Hopi cross-country runners from two rival high schools vie for the state championship while striving to find their place among their native people and the larger American culture. Win or lose, what they learn over the course of two racing seasons has a dramatic effect on the rest of their lives. Combining interviews with verite-style shooting, RACING THE REZ offers a rare view into the surprising complexity and diversity of contemporary reservation life, from the point of view of five teenage boys on the cusp of adulthood. The documentary follows Ryan, Dennis, Billy, Johnny and Joyai from the classrooms to their remote, un-electrified homes, from grueling runs across canyons and mesas to their ultimate day of reckoning - the state meet - and beyond.

TV and film have long depicted Native Americans in the past tense. It's time to shine a light on the present-day experiences of Native young adults - and explore what's possible for their futures. In ROADTRIP NATION: NATIVE AMERICAN ROADTRIP, Native leaders are telling their stories in their own words and illuminating the path for Native youth everywhere. Follow the journey of three Native young adults as they road-trip across the country to explore the possibilities. The three "roadtrippers" also reflect a snapshot of the diversity of cultures and experiences of modern Native youth. Over three weeks, the trio travels across the Southwest to sit down with Indigenous leaders who are making art, building businesses, conducting research, and shaping policy - all with the tenets of community and kinship at the forefront of their work. As the "roadtrippers" reconcile the past of their people with their possibilities for the future, they begin to realize that their ideas of personal success are becoming more and more intertwined with their desire to uplift their communities - and protect the lands they're crossing.

Education Matters aims to provide the public with real facts about the state of public education in North Carolina. The weekly television show explores everything from the history of public education to the impact of legislation and policy decisions on our public schools. Education Matters is hosted by Keith Poston, President & Executive Director of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. "With this show we want to get away from a traditional he said/she said format, having two pundits on either side of an issue highlighting opposing extremes," said Poston. "Education Matters will be an opportunity for viewers to hear directly from subject-matter experts and real front-line educators as they navigate everything from funding challenges, teacher recruitment, and the impact of poverty on student learning, to testing, academic standards, and the major racial and ethnic shifts in the student population." "One of our primary goals is to help the public understand how education policy plays out in our schools, and what kind of impact these policies are having on our students and teachers," said Poston. "Education Matters will provide a window into the classroom that is often lacking from typical media coverage or political debates."

Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on "Meet the BIPOC Press", we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media ("Justice Media Project"), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism? ". . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering." - Brooklyn Brown "I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional." - Magaly Urdiales Guests: Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather; Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media; Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, Documented
