Global Climate Disruption

Duration: 0:42:31

The Galapagos Archipelago is a model of conservation in the Pacific Ocean. Its remarkable diversity of marine species is explained by the upwelling of cold ocean currents. But an increasingly common climatic anomaly occuring far out to sea is killing life. It's El Ni?o. Scientists believe that climate change could cause the frequency and severity of this climatic phenomenon to double threatening native species that are unique in the world. In French Polynesia, biologists are studying corals and working to predict the impact of climate change on the future of our oceans and on global food security.

Natural Disaster Or Natural Phenomena

Hurricanes

Duration: 0:17:29

Audience: Students; Grades: 4-5; Subject Areas: Science. (2006) Hurricanes are nature's giants, some reaching up to nine miles tall!! But one thing is nearly certain ? every year there will be a few hurricanes that do hit land. From space, a hurricane looks like a giant, circular, swirling cloud ? with a hole in the center. The hole is called the "eye" of the storm. A hurricane is one of the biggest, most dramatic shows that Nature can put on. It's an extreme example of our global weather system in action. A hurricane is an awe-inspiring event ? but one you'll want to observe from a safe distance!

Water buffalo are native to Asia -- so what are they doing on a farm in Salisbury, North Carolina? They're there to provide milk for traditional Italian buffala mozzarella cheese and super creamy gelato for Fading D Farms. Fading D Farms is up in the hills of Salisbury, NC, where typically no kind of buffalo roams. But the farm produces milk, meat, traditional Italian buffala mozzarella cheese and -- most amazingly -- gelato. Host Chip Carter started his day milking the first water buffalo he ever met at 7:30 a.m. By noon, he'd also helped make a batch of gelato... and then made off with his own stash.

That's because Gypsy Gilliam, who's been in business there for over 20 years, is the lady behind the Market magic. Almost everything on the vast menu is North Carolina-grown. And most of what you're eating was sourced straight from the Farmers Market itself. Which is another wonder to behold. Most state terminal farmers markets are anything but public-friendly. They're industrial hubbubs that are a critical link in keeping us all fed. But the Raleigh State Market is a tourist attraction unto itself -- on every Top 10 List of things to do in Raleigh. We?ll show how it all comes together so spectacularly as a showcase for North Carolina Agriculture at Gypsy's Place.
