SHAKING IT UP: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LIZ CARPENTER tells the inspirational story of an extraordinary woman who experienced and helped shape some of the most vivid moments and movements of the 20th century. Journalist, White House official, author, humorist, political activist, and feminist leader: over her 89 years of service, Liz Carpenter was often front and center where history was unfolding, leaving her own indelible mark on events and people. Hers is an inspiring story of blazing professional trails while pushing forward an agenda for women's rights, the environment, and political engagement that is highly relevant today. Her magnetic Texas-sized personality, political know-how, and legendary wit gave her an outsized impact on historical events, including the JFK assassination, the launch of Great Society programs, and more. Carpenter's high-profile leadership roles in the National Women's Political Caucus, at the historic National Women's Conference in 1977, and in the national campaign for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment cemented her spot in American history. The film educates and inspires viewers to continue to shake things up in the ongoing quest for equal rights and human progress.

Christine's motivation to embark on this journey is her discovery that 2,500-year-old Chinese philosopher Confucius was actually-a foodie. From exploring Chinese cuisines in North America to the culinary politics of Taiwan, the tasty richness of Hong Kong, and the blended flavors of South East Asia, Christine finds connections to the gastronomic precepts of the great Chinese philosopher both ancient and modern. Each episode features Christine as a culinary adventurer, fearlessly leading viewers to a deeper appreciation of our world through a gourmand filter. In Italy Christine questions the origins of pizza, in Greece she uncovers the beginnings of her beloved baklava, and in Paris she discovers that crepes have Chinese roots. Featuring celebrity guests such as Anna Olson, chef Wan, Ming Tsai, Alvin Leung, and Janet Hsieh, CONFUCIUS WAS A FOODIE shakes up foodie myths, and takes a delicious look at the historical and contemporary landscape of Chinese cuisine.

For the first episode, we meet Kuroda Yukiko, one of Japan's leading kintsugi artisans. Kintsugi is a technique for repairing ware by gluing broken parts with lacquer and painting gold or silver powder over it. In Western cultures, ware is repaired by trying to conceal the broken parts as much as possible to return the piece to its original state. However, kintsugi does the exact opposite by making the broken parts stand out and endowing a work with newfound beauty. It is said that the kintsugi technique originated in the Muromachi period around the 15th century. Kuroda's works, which continue to make use of traditional techniques, are garnering attention from across the world. Come witness Kuroda's precise technique and passion for kintsugi.
