The Seabees On Iwo Jima

Duration: 0:56:59

Narrated by CBS Sports' Jim Nantz, THE SEABEES ON IWO JIMA focuses on the story of the United States Naval Construction Battalions of World War II. The "Seabees," some of whom were in their 60s, were recruited from the construction trades to join special battalions that built the airfields and bases needed to stage a successful war effort. Best known for their work building runways out of jungles on the coral islands in the Pacific, these construction battalions helped the United States take the war to Japan's doorstep in 1945. The "Seabees" not only built the infrastructure for the Allied war effort in Europe and the Pacific, but also often had to put down their shovels to pick up rifles and fend off enemy attacks. Their most critical and violent fight was on Iwo Jima, where they went ashore in the first wave with the Marines. It's on Iwo Jima where their "We Build, We Fight" motto was most famously put to the test.

In 1995, a box was uncovered at the home of a parishioner of All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C. Inside were nearly 50 colorful drawings created by children of the Honkawa Elementary School in Hiroshima, Japan, nearly 50 years earlier. The drawings were sent as a gift of thanks from the war-scarred Japanese children in response to a substantial donation of art and school supplies by the children of the church. Surprisingly, none of the pictures reflected the horror these children had endured less than two years earlier. Instead, the brightly colored drawings depicted scenes from their community, including self-portraits, cityscapes, festival flags and kites flying against a bright blue sky, children on a playground, cherry blossoms in bloom, city traffic on a bridge, and a girl in a beautiful kimono. There were no pictures of sadness, trauma, or fear. In 1997, the pictures were moved to a vault in the church, where members would pull them out exclusively for atomic bomb survivors. Then in 2010, members of All Souls embarked on a special journey to return the newly restored images to Japan and reunite them with the artists who created them. PICTURES FROM A HIROSHIMA SCHOOLYARD explores the fascinating stories behind these hopeful drawings and the evolution of a friendship across distance and time. The film weaves an inspiring tale of reconciliation, hope and friendship, with the drawings serving as the central characters in the narrative.

This may be one the most sentimental stops along our route! In this episode we visit the very birthplace of Poland - it is in the Greater Poland region and the cities of Poznań and Gniezno that the early events of the Polish State took place. Countless monuments, some reaching as far back as the 10th century, tell the story of the creation of Poland. Its earliest rulers and historical figures lay buried in the crypts of some of the nation's first cathedrals found here in this region. The area's cuisine is also as rich as its history - In the 17th century Greater Poland was described as a "land flowing of milk and honey." Many claim it has remained so to this day and Aleksandra will take viewers on a walk to test the notion! In this episode we'll explore the iconic historical points associated with the region and have a taste of the flavors associated with oldest part of Polish history!
