For Mrs. Bertha Landis, one of the best things about a "Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle" is the film's title. It came from her comments. "I taught them how to sing--my boys," she said. "My father was a music teacher, and he had a brother that taught music, and my mother had two brothers who taught music. So that's why it's called singing stream--it comes from a long way." The hour long documentary showcases the musical and cultural traditions of one southern black family. Through interviews and scenes from daily routines, family reunions, gospel concerts and church services, the film chronicles the history of the Creedmoor, North Carolina Landis family, as it happened during the lifetime of the family's matriarch and oldest surviving member. "A Singing Stream" documents how Mrs. Landis used her family's musical gifts, along with a deep religious faith and strong cultural traditions, to unite, discipline and motivate her children, equipping them to rise above barriers faced by blacks in the south during the last half-century. Musical performances in the film span nearly a century of black religious song styles, from unaccompanied shape-note singing to contemporary gospel. "A Singing Stream" features rehearsals and concerts by the golden echoes, a male gospel quartet that includes three Landis men, and the Echoes Of Heaven, a female quartet also made up of family members.

Explore the thrilling story of the American rowing team that triumphed at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Inspired by #1 best-seller The Boys in the Boat, the film follows the underdog team that took the nation by storm when they captured gold.
On April 2, 1936, when the 22-year-old son of a sharecropper entered the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, he was, he later remembered, barely able to control his anger. "I was angry because of the insults that Hitler and the other German leaders had hurled at me and my Negro teammates on the Olympic squad." The young athlete would channel his raw emotions into some of the most remarkable achievements in the history of athletics, winning four gold medals. To tell the story of Owens' remarkable victories in the face of Nazi racism, this film begins in the poor Cleveland neighborhood where the young athlete grew up; details his early career; describes Adolf Hitler's outsized ambitions for the 1936 Olympics; explores the movement in Western democracies to boycott the event; and explains the pressures on Owens to attend. The film also reveals the unlikely relationship Owens struck up at the games with his German rival Carl "Luz" Long and shows that, in the end, despite his success in Germany, Owens struggled to find a place for himself in a United States that was still wrestling to overcome its own deeply entrenched racism.

As the Republican National Convention comes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Laura talks with award-winning reporter and author, Malaika Jabali, author of "It's Not You, It's Capitalism: Why It's Time to Break Up and How to Move On". Wisconsin is one of the most racially unequal states in the country, with rising housing costs outpacing wages and one of the highest Black male incarceration rates in the nation. It's also seen a precipitous decline in Black voting - for either party. Are these things connected? Back in 2020 Jabali went to Milwaukee to find out and made a short film "Left Out" in which she spoke to Black elected officials as well as non-voters. In this episode of Laura Flanders & Friends we'll revisit that film, hear Jabali's advice for concerned Dems, and answers, when it comes to the RNC, what's in it for Black Midwesterners? All that and a commentary from Laura. Jabali is the former Senior News and Politics Editor at Essence Magazine. "It's almost a cottage industry of trying to figure out what happened with the white working class . . . The other side of that is that you have a lot of Black non-voters. A lot of Black people are saying, 'We don't have any options between the Republican and Democratic party' . . . So they tend to stay home. It was me trying to understand what was going on behind the numbers. I barely saw any journalism about it. " - Malaika Jabali ". . . We have a propaganda machine through the US government, media, law and policy that made it illegal to be socialists . . . Martin Luther King, the Black Power Movement, the Black Panthers, they were surveilled for any hint of thinking about any anti-capitalist thought . . . What kind of system is that where it is so hell bent on freedom, but does not give you the freedom to think about other ideas and types of policies? I don't consider that very democratic." - Malaika Jabali Guest: Malaika Jabali: Journalist & Author, "It's Not You, It's Capitalism"
